The Challenge
The client hosted its infrastructure on-premises, resulting in high ownership costs, limited scalability and accessibility, and inadequate disaster recovery capabilities.
To address these challenges, the client engaged CMC Global to migrate its extensive infrastructure, comprising nearly 500 virtual machines (VMs) and associated services, to the cloud.
The migration required careful planning to minimize business disruption while preserving data security and integrity throughout the process.
The Solution
To manage the migration effectively, CMC Global adopted a structured five-phase approach:
Phase 1: Migration Preparation and Business Planning
After evaluating pros and cons of various cloud computing services and characteristics of client system, CMC Global recommended AWS for its robust features, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
Phase 2: Portfolio Discovery and Planning
CMC Global applied its Decision Framework to guide the client through the migration process, discovering and cataloging the entire portfolio of applications and services.
Phase 3: Designing, Provisioning, and Configuration Management
CMC Global collaborated with the client to design the new cloud infrastructure, provision resources, and configure systems using tools like Terraform and Ansible.
Phase 4: Migrating and Validating Infrastructure and Applications
The migration involved moving approximately 500 VMs and various services to AWS. CMC Global ensured a seamless transition, minimizing downtime and validating the infrastructure and applications.
Phase 5: Modern Operating Model
The final phase established a modern operating model, including continuous monitoring, automated management, and robust disaster recovery protocols.”
The Result
The solution delivered measurable improvements across key operational and business performance indicators.
- ~500 VMs were successfully migrated to AWS.
- 30% reduction in infrastructure cost
- 17% reduction in operation cost
